I break down every important factor that you would look for when judging foundation. You be the judge whether the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation is the one for you.

Spoiler alert: It sure is the one for me!

Claim

Formulated with Lychee, Bamboo Grass and Cordyceps Mushroom extracts, this high-powered formula helps give skin the energy it needs to look fresher and younger. It is a super silky emulsion that floats over your skins surface for a flawless yet natural look. It goes beyond the surface, beautifying skin with a powerful combination of serum ingredients.

It helps support skin’s cellular energy and also offers key anti-aging benefits for a smoother, firmer, more lifted look. Its ultra-fine pigments cover imperfections without settling into fine lines. Plus, SPF 40 helps prevent future damage.

Packaging

In its initial launch, this foundation was encased in a glass bottle coupled with a dropper to dispense the product. Though minor, it would be notable to call out that using the dropper is not as straightforward as you think it would. You’d take a few tries before you can get product to come out, and when you do, you would have to master the art of dispensing just the right amount of product.

With this dispensing system, you’ll find that product will build up at the neck of the bottle after several days of use. It doesn’t matter if you are a neat-freak or not, you will not like this messy dispensing system. But Bobbi Brown listened to their customers and in their newest release of the foundation, they have already changed from dropper to a pump. Small change, big win!

Shades

This is available in 22 shades from Alabaster to Espresso. It’s not as extensive as the shade range of Skin Foundation (stick/liquid), but I can let this slide because this formula is meant to be light (but buildable) coverage. Light coverage bases are usually easier to blend invisibly to the skin and is more forgiving to shade mismatch.

If you happen to not have a perfect match, try to find the closest match, and when you apply the foundation, buff the foundation very well using a buffing brush so that you don’t have foundation sitting on top of your skin.  Honestly, I believe that most of us will find a shade that suits us. Bobbi Brown does not disappoint in formulating foundations that cater to cool, neutral and warm undertones.

Coverage

If you are in a market for a perfecting light-coverage foundation, this serum foundation is right up your alley. The pigments suspended in the serum sits beautifully on top of skin, giving you even and light coverage. If you have dry skin, I would recommend that you still put on your usual moisturizer before applying this. If you have combination skin, I recommend an oil-controlling primer underneath.

The coverage of this foundation sits on the light-to- medium coverage spectrum. If you put a second layer on areas of your face where you need extra coverage, you will love that it has buildable coverage, delivering the same skin-like finish.

Wear and Finish

What’s fascinating about this foundation is the fact that, since it applies like skincare and looks like skin, you forget that it actually evens out and perfects the skin. You also tend to forget that you’re wearing anything on your skin because it feels light and weightless on the skin. Personally, I do not like makeup that looks and feels heavy on the skin.

The foundation has a fresh dewy finish, which is expected of moisturizing formulas. Between your skin and the foundation, you cannot not tell the difference; the radiance feels like its from within. The finish could fool you that your *true* bare skin looks perfect and radiant. If you are combination skin like me, please set with finely-milled powder. A light dusting on the t-zone will transform the finish from dewy to satin (with luminosity shining thru).

Formula and Blendability

This water-based oil free formula marries skincare (silky emulsion) with makeup (pigment). There are 2 things you’ll notice first: (1) Fragrance: nothing nauseating but definitely worth nothing;  once blended, smell does not linger (2) Fluidity: it blends the same way that a lightweight skincare formula is absorbed to the skin. You will find this foundation one of the easiest formulas to work with your tool of choice:

  • Fingers melt the product well and gives you medium coverage
  • Buffing brush blends the product seamlessly and gives you light coverage
  • Wet sponge sheers out the product and gives you barely-there coverage

Longevity

Moisturizing formulas are not known to be long lasting so I was not really keen on judging its staying power. You would agree with me though that it’s important for foundation to wear nicely throughout the day, with no blotchiness and flaky-ness. At best, this foundation looks good (needing no re-touch) until the 4 or 5-hour mark. Beyond 6 hours, you would need to lightly blot your face with an oil clear sheet and reapply a very light face powder. Touch-up is necessary to keep makeup looking fresh, flawless and luminous beyond the 8hr mark.

Final thoughts

You will love this foundation if you have the same non-negotiables when it comes to an everyday makeup base:

  • Lightweight and undetectable coverage
  • Luminous and skin-like
  • Wears beautifully throughout the day

The sun protection (SPF) is a good bonus, but to be honest, I will still recommend you apply a separate sunscreen and day serum (for drier days) under this foundation. And since we’re on the topic of suncare, I gave the lowdown on everything sunscreen in this article. If this does not convince you to wear sunscreen, I do not know what will. 😊

The Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation is best used as a daily makeup base rather than one that is used only for special occasions. I know a lot of you actually love BB creams/CC creams/tinted moisturizers for everyday use, but if you’re in the market to indulge in a little bit more and willing to try something new, I would definitely give this one a shot!

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation: when you can have beautiful luminous skin every day, that’s ACTUALLY good for your skin, that’s a game-changer!
